Alignment question
Discussion
Had my car 4-wheel aligned the other day after getting the tyres changed.
They didn’t have the Hunter rig, but things they attached to each wheel; one per side with a scale and one with a laser which showed the alignment on the scale attached to the other wheel.
My question- they aligned the front wheels then the rear ones, but if they didn’t know the rear ones were as they should be then how did they know the front alignment was correct?
Or did I throw £44 down the drain?

Having googled, it was a Supertracker alignment rig.
They seemed to know what they were doing but from the information I found I think they did it wrong and should have aligned the rear wheels first.
It should be a simple job as the Merc CLS only allows front and rear toe adjustment but I’ll see if I can find someone good locally with a Hunter.

Hunter is better I think because it takes the measurements off fixed points, not the wheels.
My experience has been mixed to say the least. I had two full geos done on my 996 by a well-respected Porsche specialist, but when Center Gravity checked it the front was toeing-out and the rear toe was miles out and the adjustment bolts were seized solid so there was no way it was done properly previously.
Another tyre lot did our old X5 on a Hunter and triggered a DSC error as they damaged a sensor or didn't position the steering column correctly.
Not really worth the trip to the Midlands to see Center Gravity with the Merc given its lack of adjustment scope...will make enquiries to find somewhere reliable in the Reading area.

So to close this off, I found a good place locally with a Hunter.
I didn’t tell them it had been done recently and they did the alignment which according to their printout was a long way out. He also spotted that it had been changed recently and there was a potentially serious error the other lot had made with a locknut so just as well I had it re-checked.
Feels better now
