2005 Jag S-type brake problems
Discussion
A friend has inherited an S-type 3.0 auto, 2005, low miles from an elderly owner who has not used it much & now given up driving. The car is worth little ££, so I'm trying to help fix a brake problem without over-spending on it.
After MOT it drove OK, but now after very few miles since MOT, the brakes are binding; the brake pedal does not fully return after braking & the brake lights stay on. Pull up the pedal manually & the brakes fully release. The return spring on the brake pedal is working. So, with the front right wheel raised, I loosened the nuts holding the master cylinder to the servo and the brakes released; the wheel which had been locked was turning fine. So it would seem that something in the servo is holding the brakes on.
I removed the servo from the car to inspect it & could not see anything wrong. I press the input pushrod fully in, then release & the spring in the servo returns it fully to the starting (brakes off) position. If the servo is faulty, I'm quite happy to buy a replacement. But at present, I'm not certain the servo is faulty. There are some signs of brake fluid leaking from the bore of the master cylinder, but minimal; I cannot see any fluid in the servo, although view is limited.
Any ideas welcome.
Thanks
John
