Starting tread depths are listed in the link above, but the ranged from 8.5mm for the Nokian Seasonproof 2, all the way down to 6.6mm for the Michelin CrossClimate 3 Sport (normal CC3 was 7.5mm). Full list of starting tread depths (in the 225/40r18 size tested on the FWD Golf GTi ClubSport) below for those who want the TLDR.

Arguments when the resident tyre experts on here try to tell us that their experience is the complete opposite and their Chinese ditchfinders that cost £10/corner lasted 1,000,000 miles and 3 trips across the Antarctic

Me too, but I don't think I can drive consistently enough to make a career out of it - although I'd love for someone to pay for an Arctic circle snow-driving experience for me.mmm-five said:
