I've just found out that the inside of my tyre is completly bald! now would this be down to camber or tracking? I lowered the car 10 weeks ago by 40mm and didn't have the tracking done! so I am getting mixed advice about what could have caused it. Should I need camber resetting at 40mm? or is it more likely to be the tracking?

Thanks all,

Ash

camber doesn't *normally* shred the inner edge if the tyre is presented to the road in such a way that it doesn't overheat the inner edges .. that means running some toe-in trim on the front whilst under load to compensate for the camber.

Toe-out under load will very quickly overheat and shred the inner edges though, so that is more likely what yuo have (the drop in height may be exagerrating some bump-steer toe-out trim trait that too)

Note i said *under load* by that I mean under driving conditions .. VW are very keen on their negative offset geometry on the front, which can quickly add lots of toe-out if the bushes aren't in top condition .. so if your bushes are old you might need to run considerable toe-in trimming on the OE settings to get the desired true-running toe setting.

First thing to do tho is get your front end measured to see what your starting point is.

wow I'm a little lost for words! lol that was very in depth. so the gist is that you would say that it would more likly be the tracking rather than camber?

It's common for the geometry to change when you change the ride height, 40mm is quite a big change and could easily have thrown the geometry out. uggest you get it measured up and try to put it back somewhere near standard. If you've changed the ride height that much then hopefully you've changed the spring rates too, so you could be expecting different amounts of body roll now. If so you might consider changing the camber settings, this would also imply a small change in the toe-in.

I've done about 500 miles since it was lowered and the inside is completely bald! to be fair there is a bout 3mm left on the rest of the tyre and when you stare at the car from a frontal angle the wheels look like they are pointing out slightly! but that could be a trick of the mind

for the sake of a few quid at your local national tyres i'd get it measured ..
yep, i my post above i mean the tracking is by far the biggest cause of uneven wear like you have, not the camber

Checked the mileage, I've done 1600 miles not 500 as thought. and as for the the tracking it was off the gauge when measured!

Pointing at toe out I might add as well!
