Porsche 944 shocks and geometry
Discussion
Hi All,
I have been doing up an 944 over the last year or so, and although it has an MOT OK, its desperately in need of 4 new shocks. I plan to replace them myself after doing brake discs, pads, wheel bearings, steering column, calipers etc for all 4 I thought why stop now!
Now the back shocks seem standard with everyone giving about £40 + VAT for the shocks, and I have been reliably informed that these are quite simple to fit, only needing to take the wheels off if you want more space etc etc and we have the kit. The fronts however seem to have two types of kit. ONe shock insert for about £40 + VAT and then another lot for about 70 - £80 which seems to have some extra kit? I am thinking that while I am doing it and given the general state of some of the parts that came off previously I would like to go for the shock + assorted parts... Has anyone got any experience of this and any tips of what other things to get while doing the front shcoks like polyeurethane bushes and whatnot? Also, does anyone know of any 4 wheel geometry places about in Berks area that would be able to sort out the tracking etc as its a bit wonky after all the work and so the grip and handling is terrible!!
Please someone have a wheel alignment place (or a mate who has!) who reads this and can sort me out with a deal in exchange for some pints and a new friend!

The more expensive price for the front will be for the complete strut, with the cheaper price being the insert only. If the strut itself is ok, changing the inserts should be fine as long as you can get the caps to come off! Poly bushes would tighten things up nicely, particularly if the car still has the original bushes. 4 wheel alignment takes a while on these - make sure you find somebody who knows how to do it properly and can adjust the camber etc not just the front toe.
Cheers. I think its only sensible to dow the whole lot and try to get some bushes in while I'm at it. I have a Vectra 2.5 V^ as a dent magnet for London during the week and that makes the 944 seem horrid!
So desperately need to get the whole suspension sorted. Thankfully I drove an OK 944 the other day and was well happy with the way that was.
