Car bibles says a 235 tyre needs a 8 - 9.5 but can you drop down to a 7.5 j ????

I've got standard fitment 235/60R16 on 7.5j on my E38 735. That is of course a pretty high tyre wall might be more of an issue on lower profile rubber.

Hmmm, that was helpful, sorry wink

Cheers,
Rob

Even if it fits it might not work well. In your case I'm sure your ok but for future reference whether X fits on Y largely depends on the profile of the tyre. What have you squeezed on?

As a general rule the rim should be 90% of the tyre width.
A 235mm width tyre should therefore ideally go on a 8.0-8.5in rim, you can usually allow a tolerance of 0.5in either side of this so 7.5in to 9.0in.
This is just a general rule, check with the tyre manufacturer for allowable limits as sidewall height comes into play at the extremes.
