Steering Racks
Discussion
Sure I posted this yesterday but it's not there so here goes again....
Firstly please excuse my ignorance but my only esperience of steering racks is the old non PAS type - Hillman Imps etc
Does the newer PAS rack use the PAS fluid to lubricate the moving parts or is there still a seperate oil system within the rack. My expereience is that the gaiters will be part full of oil but the split gaiter on my current steed (Volvo Estate) is completely dry....

You did... And I answered thus:
If your gaiters are full of a reddish colour oil on a PAS rack chances are the PAS fluid is leaking past the seals. Some lube is fine, but they aren't usually swimming in it.
It should be almost or completely dry inside the gaiters on your Volvo. The lubed parts are behind an oil seal that sits just inboard of the gaiter.

So where in the vast ether of the internet did it all go? The post and reply I mean.
Thanks HRG, the gaiters are dry inside, I was puzzled by this as I expected there to be oil leaking out. Need a new gaiter in due course, guess it's an MoT fail if not an "advice" however as a temp measure I have superglued the split (about 30mm) and will cover with silicon to stop ingress of dust.
Cheers
