Hi,

My car has developed a sound that I can only diagnose as sounding like lots of tweeting birds! The noise only occurs when the car is going right (even slightly it seems...) but left no issue. Appears to be coming from the front drivers side. What could this be? Noise seems to go when I hit the brakes though...

Cheers.

There's your clue. It's the brake pads rubbing slightly against the disc. When you apply the barakes, you push the pad more firmly against the disc and the squealing stops.

Could be a caliper sticking slightly, or rust around the edge of the disc catching the brake pad, or just a slightly glazed pad touching the disc.

Try cleaning and freeing off the brake caliper, cleaning off any loose flakes of rust with a sanding pad, ot putting a bit of copperslip on the back of the brake pad where it sits against the caliper piston.

If the discs are well worn, the lip that forms on the edge of the disc is very likely to be the cause.
