Hi, I've just fitted new rear shocks on an old Polo and if you rock the back end of the car hard (to the point of the wheel almost lifting off), it makes a knocking sound at the highest point. I'm pretty sure this is the shock absorber hitting its internal stop on full extension, but I wanted to double check here that it couldn't be anything else like the rear beam bushes. I've had an assistant rock the car and the clunk comes at the same time that the shocker hits maximum extension.

Cheers !

If it's a single knock at the extremes of travel then it could be hitting the stops, but I'd get it checked out. Do all the shocks you've changed (all four?) do the same thing?
