Hello gents,

After some advise and tips please, I am a mechanic by trade but know very little about bodywork & detailing. Its an area I would like to get more involved with.

Anyway I have a Oak green Mk2 golf gti (my pride and joy 12 months ago only driven now and again) and about 18 months ago i had her painted. However due to other projects and commitments it has been left sat on axle stands in an open car port for around 9 months. Unfortunately I live on a new estate and due to nearbye building it now has a thick layer of dirt and brick dust on the paint.

After recently recieving the outer rims of the BBS RMs back from beeing polished its promted me to bring her back to her former glory, but im really worried about washing it for the first time as i think i will scratch the paint which under all the dust is perfect.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Need some advise how to go about it please, Thanks in advance.

If you have a foam lance i would advise mixing up a strong mix of your detergent and once you have rinsed the car via hose spray foam on and allow to soak in... the soapier the better you dont want to be rubbing that dust everywhere so as much lube in way of detergent as possible is needed on the surface... i would do this a couple of times before even going near it with a wash mitt... remember never a sponge lol

As above, snow foam will sort that. If you dont have one, Id post up on the regional forum and see if you can borrow one - you will make a right mess of the paint if you just hose it down and wash it

Will do.

While Im at it,

Im sure this must have been covered a million times before but i have a lot of black plastic exterior trims on both my Golfs. Mk2 and Mk3 gti, at the moment the mk3 is my daily and i use Auto Glym bumper care to stop it going grey. I find i does the job but doesnt last very long, and when it rains it stains the paint under the treated trim leading to swirls etc when its next washed.

What would you guys recomend? I have heard a heat gun is good or linseed oil. What would you use on your car?

Thanks again gents!

I've read that Peanut oil (not linseed) is good to help restore plastic bumpers, but the heat gun treatment may do the trick anyway. Best of luck getting your dust removed, it looks a lovely example. smile
