Tank Tape Residue

The previous owner of my car sealed up the sunroof with what looked like a heavy duty version of duck tape in black.

I've removed the surface of the tape and it's left a lot of hard white residue. I've gone for it with white spirit but no joy, it's come of the glass roof fine (using w/s and an old credit card) but I'm trying not be be too rough with the painted surface.

Should I persist or is there a wonder product out there anyone could suggest that would do the job?

WD40 is normally very good at getting rid of this sort of stuff.
