Polishing plastic lights

Im looking for some advise on what to use to polish the plastic lens on my rear lights they look good for 40 years old but have some small scratches and are slightly dull.
The colour still looks good when held up to a light so im hoping they can be polished.

Clear, toothpaste if you are from Yorkshire, plastic polish if not.
Coloured lenses, check it isn't lacquer, and if not, follow the above.
