If its about 2" square and random in direction of scratches then it is most likely a bird dropping removal scratch caused by trying to remove it with a tissue or sponge and simply grinding the grit into the screen. These also tend to have a certain amount of the scratches within the matrix which are much deeper and these are nearly impossible to remove by hand polishing alone. The risk you also run by polishing in one area is localised lending of the screen which is why successful removal of a scratch is about technique as well as the actual equipment you us. Doing a test area will simply fill the deepest scratches with the Polish and highlight it if you dont get the scratch out. Post a pic of it if you can...
He may have been a pro valeter, was he a pro glass polisher?
As long as the scratches were not too deep you should be able to get them out but if you can get your nail into the scratch then maybe not advisable.
It would be worth getting them polished to avoid the lottery of a screen fitted by an insurance "approved" contractor and of course a whopping bill added to your claims history
