Any painters in the house?
Discussion
Got a bit of an issue with a paintshop that has worked on the P1 recently, I will give you the full story....
Stones came off the back of a truck and collected the front of the P1 so went through insurance to get a front end respray. Whilst it was there I mentioned a few other jobs that might aswell get done.
Originally quoted £1000 for the front end respray and about another £1000 for all the extra stuff.
Whilst it was there it had the following done:
Front Bumper and Splitter (insurance)
Drivers Wing (insurance)
Drivers door (insurance)
Drivers rear quarter (insurance)
Passenger wing (insurance)
Bonnet (insurance)
Drivers Side Skirt (insurance)
Windscreen (insurance)
Other jobs I asked to be done were:
Rear Bumper
Top Half of spoiler including lacquer of the carbon strip
Passenger Door
Passenger rear quarter
Passenger Side Skirt
Inside of boot lid (around the mouth if you know where I mean) and this involved removing the rear screen
Underseal and Cavity Wax
Rear arch lips stone chip painted
Paint supplied new bumper bars front and back
(they also charged me for "repairing dents" down the sides.....so just filling and sanding....something that would be done anyway?? And these were tiny tiny tiny little dents)
I had a bill of £429 in new parts as I got them to buy in all new screws, nuts, brackets, the lot.
The car is only on 35000miles and was clean before, not a spot of rust or rusted bolts etc. etc.
In the end we managed to get the insurance to pay out £3400 to the painter for the work, and this was just for the insurance covered parts- so they got paid VERY well for the parts covered and naturally I expected I would be pretty much covered and only really have my parts bill to pay and my £350 excess.
But the company in question still presented me with a bill of £3000!
So that is approx £6500 to do that work?? Does this sound right to anyone? Sounds steep to me.....especially given I was quoted about £2000 to begin with! (albeit I wanted new parts but that only came to £429)
Anyone any advice on what to do here?

First of all go speak to them and tell them what you think, nicely, and see if you can come to an arrangement oweing to the above monies they have received...etc, etc.
If you don't get anywhere get onto trading standards and also contact the Motor Agents Association.
Your being ripped off proper stylee mate, sorry
I wouldn't dream of charging that much for a bare metal job on a rolls royce.
They are having a laugh.

Am I right you had a full respray bar boot lid and roof ???
and had bumpers removed to fittings replaced , windscreen out work , under body wax and seal and new fittings all round.
If the work is done to a high standard using quality paint materials , and panels were removed painted and refitted then thats not a bad price for all the work , the only issue i see is that if it was not an agreed price before hand or updated during the work.
we recently repainted a car with new parts trim and paint materials (special coloured limited to only one company/scheme) came to around £3000 + vat which the public seem to forget about and JUST see a total bill that seems expensive.

Yup- that's basically it. and had bumpers removed to fittings replaced , windscreen out work , under body wax and seal and new fittings all round.

£3000 + VAT I would not complain about - and I would have happily paid the £1000 additional over the original insurance quotation....
But this lot have already had over £3000 out of my insurance company AND still want the best part of £3400 from me ON TOP. That is what irks me and in my opinion is a p1ss take.
Worst thing is- I washed the car yesterday for the first time (done 0 miles in it but has been snowing for 2 weeks) just to hae a closer look and there is a raft of issues so not been done to a high standard at all.
Terrible finish in the door shuts- like no laquer
Door seals don't seal - water gets in the car
Around the door shut line there is a bright blue line about 4mm wide (diff colour)
Drivers A pillar is orange peel from top to bottom
Scrape in the paint above the rear drivers side window
Really dissapointed in them tbh and am going to have to tell my brother to avoid them as he was due to have work done by them later this month.

from just your description i can tell , you have got over spray in the door shuts , the bright blue line is where the shuts have been soft edged and not done properly so you have the base colour coat exposed.
A pillar will be dry due to not wanting to coat heavily with paint which may cause run or sag.
same sort of work and cost you should get a finish which is better than factory , (slightly tricky when the roof and boot lid are not being painted) and flawless it should be.
I dont want to bare even worse news , how long ago did this take place as problems normally take around 6-10 weeks to shows once the paint has "settled" the fillers from polishing compounds have washed away to show the "real" quality of finish .
I have seen a 50k job that need lots of my input to put right so cost does not always mean great work i guess

I think it was completed paint about a month or so ago, maybe even longer.from just your description i can tell , you have got over spray in the door shuts , the bright blue line is where the shuts have been soft edged and not done properly so you have the base colour coat exposed.

How difficult/expensive is it to get all of this corrected? Really worried about he quality of work now....
Car was in there for 5 months and I'm pretty amazed mistakes were made given the length of time they had it!
They want me to put the car back in this week to get bits sorted but I am unsure now. Do I put it back or will they just hold the car to ransom?
I would need to get the car home and wash it to know if I was happy with it in any case so wouldn't pay a penny til I was happy.
This situation has caused a total lack of trust now

in your case you need an indi inspection carried out with report .
I have done these many times in the past for a set fee , one report i wrote got an owner with British hand made supercar completely stripped and rebuilt to higher standard which took 9 months to carry out and the owner was given leather portfolio full of photos of the complete process on hand over of his supercar.
this would be the last case thou as first you need to discuss with the person/company who carried out the work and they are allowed a second chance to correct work , but this still does not solve the price issues you have.

Are these issues quite straight forward to sort out?I have done these many times in the past for a set fee , one report i wrote got an owner with British hand made supercar completely stripped and rebuilt to higher standard which took 9 months to carry out and the owner was given leather portfolio full of photos of the complete process on hand over of his supercar.
