paint types and mixing up
Discussion
can anyone help, i have sprayed cellulose previously and its a straight fifty fifty mix and after a curing process a decent flat and polish. . .however, i need to do a mates bonnet and i bought the 2K paint and thinner, but not really sure of the mix to use. I got the paint a while back, and cannot remember the mix ratio. . . anyone ?
OP, in your post you talk about 2k paint and thinner mixing ratio, so I presume you are asking how much thinner to add once the 2k is mixed.
I always find the amount of thinner added is the choice of the sprayer, depending on many factors, such as tip size, how hot/cold it is, and the confidence of the sprayer.
As an example I sell a lacquer called Mipa CS85, now some of my customers run it neat through a 1.8mm set up, others add up to 20% 2k thinners and put through a 1.0 gun, it really is your choice.
Id start with say 10% thinners, and work up from there.

thanks for all the info, the gun a devilbiss has a 1.8 tip, and generally i seem to get on better with a runny mix for some reason. I am only spraying in my garage, so no booth, totally weather dependant. I have read about air fed masks but do not have one. . .i did speak to the shop about this, and there view was as its a well ventilated room a standard mask (3m jobby) will suffice. . . i have heard the fumes are absorbed by your eyes since buying the paint, but there also seems to be so much mis-information its hard to know whats right and what isnt !
OP, the 3m masks wont stop the isocyanate, as far as I know, the only non air fed mask that will is made by Gerson, google will bring up some info, we sell them but ill not put up link.
2k is bad for you, end of, it will seep in to your skin, through your eyes and any other soft tissue.
Wear a mask, long sleves, gloves and goggles and that will help no end, its not as if you are doing spraying 10 hrs a day for life.

Bit of reading from HSE on isocyanates:

Main risk is by inhaling spray. Absorption through skin etc is a popular misconception - look at the '10 bodyshop myths' part in the link: http://www.hse.gov.uk/mvr/bodyshop/myths/myth9.htm
Continued contact with skin may well cause dermatitis & you don't want it in your eyes!
Check the case studies in the link as well.

Usual mix is 2 parts paint to 1 part hardener and then add 10% thinner.
A 1.8 tip is far to big to use for colour its usually used for high build 2k primer, get down to machine mart and buy one of their gravity feed 1.4 set up guns.

Good luck!

Just ask whoever sold you the paint for the technical data sheet, they'll give it to you for free. It'll tell you the optimum gun set up, what air pressure to have (ideally at the gun) what sort of flash-off and it will definitely tell you the mixing ratio. Whilst a lot of 2k may well be 2:1+5-10% it could be 3:1, 4:1 or 5:1, dont let people on the internet give you a guess, put the effort in and find out!
I'd agree totally with Wheel man and protect yourself as best you can...

You'll need some hardener if its 2k.Once you get it its 2:1 with 10 or 20% thinner.
