Starting point to keeping my car shiny
Discussion
At the risk of sounding stupid, what does claying achieve, and what is the difference between wax and polish?
The car's paint looked great last Fri after it had been polished ready for me to pick her up but performance blue appears to show the dirt the rain has dropped rather a lot of dirt so really just want to keep it clean and shiny.

Clay removes bonded in contaminants.
Polish brings up the finish. I use SRP which can also hide a multitude of sins especially in dark paintwork.
Wax protects the finish from the polish.
Cleaning can start to get obsessive. But waxing definitely makes your hard work last. By the looks of it your car should not need claying if it already looks good.

Is wax the last layer or is it between cleaning and polishing?
Is it vital as well? Can you get away with just a clean and polish?

If you are ordering online, I would suggest using somewhere like http://polishedbliss.co.uk or http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk rather than Halfords.
The link above covers the process well, but in simple terms the process is:
Wash (Regularly)
Clay (once or twice a year)
Polish (once or twice a year, after claying)
Protect - wax/sealant (every few months, once water has started beading)

Another vote for cleanyourcar.
Personally I don't bother with polish. It's always been a real pain to use and difficult to work in. Instead I just use Colinite 476s (regarded to be one of the most durable) every 6 - 8 weeks. If it needs a deep clean then it's clay, P21S paint cleanser then colinite wax.
One thing I would definitely recommend is a good quick detailing spray. I use it all the time.
Edit: one more product to consider if you're feeling flush is 303 aerospace protectant for interiors and plastics.
