Wrap clingfilm around anything electrical or likely to allow water ingress, use a decent de greaser and a brush, then rinse the engine gently....I use a watering can myself.....dry off and dress the plastic parts.......remove the clingfilm and run the engine for around ten minutes to warm up and dry out.
Method I use:
Wrap anything that shouldn't get wet in cling film / plastic bags
Spray with Megs Super Degreaser
Run engine at idle(do not do this if you have an open air filter and have covered it in cling film
)
Shut the engine off
Spray again with MSD
Agitate with a brush
Run the engine at idle
Rinse with the open end of a hose
Repeat as needed
Run the engine to help dry
Turn of engine
Mop up any pooling water
Dress plastics
Using this method, do not let the engine get too hot before rinsing with cold water. The reason I have the engine running when rinsing is I found it helps to beat water ingress into the plugs. It's not necessary however if you are only rinsing. You can use a pressure washer to rinse, but only advisable at low pressure.
