Hi,

We've got a Mercedes B class which is starting to rust at the bottom of the doors - you can see it from the inside - its in the fold where the inner and outer pressings meet. Its only very slight so i don't think it needs repairing, but i would like someone with a degree of expertise to work out why its rusting and treat it so it doesn't come back.

byt he I took it to the dealer who was a bit bizare but basically said that he'd send a claim off to Mercedes but that they expect 8 year old cars to rust and therefore they were almost certainly not going to do anything to help.

So any recomendations of a firm to treat it? Or what I should search for when looking for a firm. In Norfolk but happy to travel.

Thanks

Try and find a helpful Mercedes dealer, they all have a 30 year corrosion warranty.

I have sent customers back to Merc with 8-10 year old cars and they have been sorted under warranty.

Seriously? If Merc took all their rusty vehicles back and paid out they go out of business!

Have all the doors started rusting where the skin is flanged over or just the one? It could be that its had a doorskin at some point.
Edit to say:
Not that its much help but we were regularly replacing front wings due to corrosion on that era of Mercedes when they were a year old!

Its definitely worth trying Merc, nothing lost, unfortunately they have quite a few ways of getting out of a warranty claim though. And f no joy its the usual adage, get someone by referral, its the best form of advertising.
Keep in mind though, if its being repaired and not renewed sooner or later the rust will come back, unfortunately there's no magic wand with rust repairs.

Thanksfor replies, yeh, I'll try my best with Merc but there doesn't seem to be much hope.

I assume the process is like when I had rusty cars as a youth - sand back, treat rust, paint over, hope it doesn't come back for a while.

A & B Class are notorious for this on all the doors, including the rear one. MB changed the sealing method of the door skins around 2007.

How long have you had the car, and does have full MB dealer service history?

The way the dealers handle rusty MBs seems very random - some people seem to get loads of work done with no issues and others get nowhere. Strictly, most of the repairs are done as "goodwill" as the 30yr warranty covers corrosion from the inside to the outside and that's actually quite unusual.

I would get it along to a classic car restoration bodyshop.....not an accident repair place. Have you tried these guys, Classic Car Restorations in Rackheath near Norwich? NR13 postcode.
