My Boxster is in for a service, and they have recommended applying underseal to it.
Has anyone had this done to a car recently, and what kind of price did you pay?

Local authorities haven't stopped salting our roads.... and some people who actually own their cars care about them.

Look in one of the Land Rover magazines in your local newsagent/supermarket they are full of rust proofing firms advertising.

New Mustangs come in without underseal (or they do, but it only covers the exhaust and rear differential... long story!). I'm being quoted around £500 to get it done. There is a specialist for Mustangs, but I've seen generic companies too; plenty about it appears.

I shoved a load of Dinitrol underseal stuff under my 1994 Corrado as it needed it.

My 2007 Golf however, isn't even painted underneath, or inside, and there is zero rust on it anywhere. I can't see it crumbling to pieces in the next 10 years either, so I won't be undersealing it.

OP - why did they recommend it? Can they see corrosion under there?

I think the question to them is why it is needed. What happened to what was on there?

I would look at classic car or 4x4 places as there are quite a few people out there spraying on rubbish just to make a quick buck.

if you are paying for a garage to do it, 500-600 quid easy. if you are doing it yourself, 4 x tins of 3m body schutz and a compressor and you'll have change from 50 quid.

Do not underseal it! Your Boxster is already undersealed, and from memory aren't they galvanised as well?

I make the assumption you have corrosion on everything attached to the body, but underseal won't help with that, in fact it'll make it a lot worse. You need a penetrating wax designed for the underside.

Dinitrol make excellent products.

Surely they're undersealed from the factory & most of the underside is covered in undertrays or wheelarch liners anyhow?.

It really depends if the car is a long term keeper or a 3 year throw away lease deal.

Anyone can blow some black gunge about with a schutz gun, but a proper job is more involved. Are you talking about a proper strip-down, derust, cavity wax and coating of underseal, or something else?,

For a proper strip down, arch liners out, steam clean, derust, rub down and then dinitrol of underside, inside chassis and doors on my Discovery 3, i was quoted £650.

Would come with a cd of pictures of the full job to show the full job.

caking the black underseal on is a couple of hrs work , depends if they plan to dismantle lots of the car to get at the hidden bits and how well they plan to treat any existing rust before covering it up

my thoughts ...its a modern car , keep it jet washed in the winter and spot repair any scabs with some epoxy primer

What about spraying the underside with ACF50 like all the motorbikists do to their bikes? It would be less messy.

Thread resurrection.
Anyone knows a good underseal company in London or North of London? Any product recommendation as well?

Thank you.

Don't use underseal, it dries out, moisture then gets behind it and the rust process starts.
Just get the underside steam cleaned (not just jet washed) and get it waxoiled instead. Don't forget to get all the box section and cavities done too.

10x over, its cheaper to brush waxoyl onto your floorpan than to cut it out and weld a new one in.
Undersealing your car is like brushing your teeth in that it takes no time at all and is infinitely preferable to the alternative.

I sometimes wonder if people who do not underseal their cars change their underwear with any frequency - they obviously dont mind being crusty and minging underneath so its a question of how far that philosophy extends into other areas of their lives.
