Hi,

I have just picked up my new BMW 118D in white and had the BMW Protect X/Guard X applied as part of my deal. I understand that it has a lifetime guarantee.

I just wanted to know what is the best products to use to keep the car as perfect as possible with the guard X applied? Also what is the best washing routine to use?

Do I have to use certain products in order to maintain the lifetime guarantee??

Thanks in Advance!

You have to apply a 'conserver' monthly... if it loses its 'lustre' (how can you quantify that?) they'll re-apply it free.

P.S. You have to get bird droppings off quickly. But surely that applies to all paintwork.

You're supposed to use the "Conserver" each month (only £60 for 5 litres). TBH it's a rip-off (the actual stuff is about £60 to the dealer).

OK Thanks.

How about other cleaning products? Am I OK to use my usual Triplewax wash and wax shampoo on it?

Also can anyone recommend some general cleaning products to use? Pre wash spray? Alloy Wheel Cleaner?

Many thanks

If it was thrown in for free then you haven't lost out. If you paid extra for it, then it probably wasn't worth it.

There's a whole detailing forum on here: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/forum.asp?h=0&...

However I'm a big fan of bilthamber products (available on Amazon) I think all the awards should sum it up. http://www.bilthamber.com/awards

I use the auto foam, shampoo, cleanser fluid and double speed wax. I need to order some of their alloy cleaner to try but for the price I don't think you can find anything better.

This is 1 coat of double speed wax on a friends BMW https://youtu.be/Ef2LNTpM6Z4

Depends what you mean by "perfect". If you mean keeping the paintwork free of blemishes, then Soft99 Fusso Coat. If it's stone chips, then forget all paint "treatments" of this type - the only thing that's got any chance is paint protection film.

Protect X is GardX
https://www.gardx.co.uk/news/gardx-protection-anno...

Reviews - not too impressive https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/www.gardx.co.uk

Protect X with a lifetime guarantee seems to be a markeing misdirection.

The guarantee seems to be a seperate insurance policy to the actual product itself
https://www.stratstone.com/-/media/files/pdf/paint...

for paint, fabric, leather - the stuff already in your car, not so much for the durability of the Protect X product added.
https://www.john-clark.co.uk/bmw/vehicle-protectio...
"Provides a transferable Lifetime Guarantee for paint, leathers and fabric"

Guarantee says they'll reapply it if your car looses lustre, no mention if they will restore the lustre!

Lifetime refers to the period in which you can claim - your ownership of the car.

On a private sell, where there is no option for a resell of the product, they will take cash as a transfer fee of the guarantee.

On a trade in the guarantee expires, as the dealer can offer a resell of the same product to the next purchaser.
There's no value to the dealer if the product has been applied previously, they may as well take any stickers off.

For the actual durabiliy of the Protect X product wouldn't expect it to last more than a few years at best.

A dealer offers the product on used cars too, claiming they don't know if it has already been applied to a car they supplied and serviced from new.
Either the previous owner didn't have it done, not an endorsement for the product.
Or it has been done, in which case how can a second application to fabric penetrate the first 'protective layer'? it would just sit on top, or may be it it just doesn't last that long, not a 'lifetime' for the product, just the guarantee (insurance claim period).

You have to comply to prevent an invalid claim - Failure to comply with the manufacturer’s or dealer’s
instructions for care of the paint, fabric, carpet or leather.

Remember to ask your dealer or manufacturer for their instructions for care of the paint, fabric, carpet or leather.
