Tips on caring for single stage paint?

I have a milano red Integra, which at some point has had a full respray in single stage gloss.
On the plus side, it polishes up beautifully, however I recently had to have it machine polished due to it getting covered in white water spots in heavy rain followed by hot sunshine, these would not come out by hand, and etched deep into the paint.
That little episode made me realise just how careful I am going to need to be to preserve the paint.
Any tips in terms of process or products?
the paint is fairly thin on the bonnet and roof now, so it won't survive many more machine polishes, so i want to protect the paint as much as i can.
