Not really sure how to describe this. I have some sort of deposits on the sills of my car and no amount of washing gets rid of them. I'm pretty sure they're in line with the drain holes on the doors. The rest of the sills are shiny black, but this is sort of rough and dull. I can only assume that something that's drained from inside the door has left a layer of something on the paintwork. As I said, rubbing with a sponge or finger doesn't remove it, but I can sort of remove it with my fingernail - although I'm wondering whether I should do this in case I'm causing damage. I've had the car for about 6 months but it's a year old altogether so it's not old age or anything. Can anyone suggest what it might be, and even better, suggest how I might clean it off?

It’s probably cavity wax running out of the sills, flowing freely in the heat.

Aha. Thanks for that. Would that be because it's been so damn hot recently? Would explain why I hadn't noticed it before.

So next question, how to get rid?

Edit: Sorry, just noticed you said sills. Did you mean running out of the sills or out of the doors?

Could be wax dripping out of the door drains due to the heat.
Use a solvent - something on the lines of one of the Tar removers.

Thanks everyone. Any other suggestions than tar remover before I go purchasing?

White spirit or a bit of petrol on a rag then cleaned up properly?
