Toyota land cruiser 2002 rear wheel arches rusting.
Discussion
A full inspection of the body on our Toyota Land Cruiser new 2003 revealed that the under wings underseal by the manufacturer stopped short of the outer rim of the wheel arch by about 50mm of metal............. I suspect that the off road enthusiasts already know about that potential problem and know also that the indent collects a lot of mud also which can lead to premature perforation.
I have treated the rusty metal right away so the bare unsealed part of the outer metal wheel arches right around the whole area have now been sealed. The recent technology of polyurethane based polymers has been used with the appropriate primers........
I wonder what the original nigh on 100% covering was used originally & why that did not cover 100% of the exposed steel surface?
I see the front wings are plastic lined but the rear has only one badly fitting plastic protector about a foot square which is there to protect the fuel fill pipe which is inadequate......... This must be taken off and additional protection done to the metal surfaces.
On the whole the body is well above average but a good dose of home made oily protection is call for to stop the rot.
Toyota may well ask what do you want for £22000 back in 2003 & the answer is I wanted better than to see the underseal to the rear
wheel arches applied with a view to preventing the steel corroding which it was not........ Inbuilt mortality or else!
