When I'm cleanin' windows
Discussion
Hi, I'm getting streaks and generally not very clean car windows, the outside is ok but the inside seems ok when I clean it but looks streaky in the morning and specially in the winter sun.
I wash the car then use Rain X from a spray bottle I use a separate clean microfibre cloth for applying the Rain X and a separate clean microfibre cloth. What am I doing wrong? I'm thinking I need a soft cloth to polish the Rain X off with rather than the microfibre cloth.
All comments and idea's welcome.
Thanks for looking.

This is something I've noticed over recent years living in the city, the inside of the front windscreen seems to gather an almost grease like crap over it and when you go to clean it you simply end up moving the crap about. Maybe it's crap from the sheer number of diesels around coming in through the vents...who knows.
Was doing my wife's windscreen and I eventually found that I had to absolutely soak the windscreen with cleaner and only give it one wipe and let it dry. Trying to wipe it dry ends up leaving crap behind because I think you end up rubbing the crap back on.
Also, I borrowed some windscreen cleaner from our workshop a few days ago to do my own car and found this stuff destroyed the crap on my screen and left it crystal clear. It was 5L containers which I had to soak the cloth with but I'll go and find out the make. The windscreen cleaner smell from it stayed in the car for days also so I'm guessing it's strong stuff. Regular windscreen cleaner smell disappears within minutes.
But either way, I do find soaking the windscreen is best and give it a minute to eat into the crap.

The haze you get inside is usually from the A/C, if you have it set to blow onto the windscreen or left in Auto if you have climate control, as you've found it is most noticeable at this time of year with the low sun.
Autoglym's glass polish on a slightly damp microfibre will see to this no problem at all.
If the haze is on the outside a cerium oxide based glass polish like Carpro Ceriglass will do the trick.
cheers
Chris

The haze is more so on the inside of the MX5 it doesn't have AC, I think it's probably the greasy residue from diesels. The wife's daily a Tiguan with AC also gets it but not as annoying as the MX5 due to the rake of the screen and how it catches the sun.
I was thinking of using diluted dish washing liquid on the inside to try cut through the grease and then use Rain X.

most of the cr.p on the inside of the screen is from the oils in the dashboard being evaporated in the recent hot weather
article is 12 years old but it seems to be true judging by the state of my cars screen during recent hot weather
