Hi

I need to remove
-rust from my exhaust silencer and supports
-rust from my brake calipers
-Oxidation and light rust on part of my chassis and suspension arms
-spot of rust on hood
-external wheel hub

What you suggested to work better ?
Plan underneath is to remove rust with steam cleaner and just spray bh dynax s50 aerosol.
I’m open to better suggestions because i think s50 on exhaust /calipers is not the best solution and doesn’t leave transparent finish (caliper/silencer is in part visible outside).

For the hood i have no idea how cheap fix it

Thanks
Max

I don't think introducing steam into the problem is going to help.
Forcing water into the rust seems a bad idea.
Wire wheel on a drill to remove and then paint or spray on etch primer followed by paint of your choice seems a better idea.

thanks for your reply
water yes you right can be bad idea but all the anti-rust products are water based or diluted

what about the "hot" parts exhaust and calipers?

Steam will not remove rust, but will promote it much more than just cold water. Rust removal in this situation will either need to be mechanical (e.g. wire wheel, sandpaper, grit blasting) or chemical (e.g. phosphoric acid or one of the many commercial rust removing solutions ).

Your photos.

1. Bonnet damage. Either touch in with paint & a fine brush & live with it (you're just trying to seal it & stop rusting) OR for perfect it's a bonnet respray.

2. Silencer & brackets. Exhausts rust from inside & out. Inside caused by the water produced as a byproduct of burning fuel & unless the car does journeys of sufficient length to boil it off will rot it out from inside. You could try applying very high temperature paint to the outside but it may just burn off with the heat. Or fit a stainless steel system.
With the s/s you may find more than one grade of stainless in use.
On my own car the easily visible bits - part of the rear silencer & the tailpipe - are as shiny as the day I fitted them 17 years ago & a magnet doesn't stick. The front silencer is also shinyish & its discolouration is due to the heat of the exhaust gases, a magnet doesn't stick The rest of the system incl the tubular manifolds has a coating of surface rust & a magnet does stick. No thinning of the metal of any relevance. Note that the term is 'stain less' not 'rust free'.

3. Underbody structure. Good wire brush & apply a decent underseal. You may get recommendations on here from .others. I've never had an issue with Waxoyl applied over cleaned & dry metal. Best applied in warm weather & warming the tin up first can help - loosen top & stand in warm water.

4. Surface rust on caliper. Either leave as is or wire brush & paint with one of the caliper paints. I've never painted a caliper.

5. If that's more underbody then see 3 above.

6. Surface rust on caliper & the bell of the disc. Caliper see 4 above. Bell you could wire brush & paint, but I've never done that either.

thanks for the support guys
I will do what suggested and use bilt hamber dynax S50 for coating after have been brushed away the rust.

car is almost 7 year old, what will happen if I do nothing ?
worse case scenario the exhaust supports will brake and will get holes on the silcencer,
but do you really think i have to worry about calipers and chassis ?

thanks again

-rust from my exhaust silencer and supports
You won't stop that - just let it go and replace the box when it eventually rusts through. You could apply a high temp paint to tidy it up, but the rust will always come through eventually on hot stuff like that.

-rust from my brake calipers
Paint them with Hammerite

-Oxidation and light rust on part of my chassis and suspension arms
Ideally you'd want to sand down and apply POR-15 plus a top coat. Failing that, use ACF-50 during winter and then apply an underseal in the summer when it's warm (DO NOT apply underseal to a cold chassis)

-spot of rust on hood
Get it painted

-external wheel hub
Paint with Hammerite
