Will this be a write off? 2009 3 Series
Discussion
Was in an accident earlier in the week - some muppet in a van puled out straight into my passenger side and put a very big dent in both passenger side doors.
Car has been picked up by approved repairer from Admiral, and expecting an idea of the repair cost within a few days. The guy who collected said it will definitely need 2 new doors, but may also need a new B-pillar.
Car is a 2009 BMW 3 Series (335i) with ~65k miles on the clock. Autotrader would suggest the cost of replacing it would be around 9.5-10.5k. Is this likely to be written off?
My initial thoughts are if the B-Pillar doesn't need to be replaced then probably not as it will probably be 2-3k (?). But if it does, I don't really know how much this likely to add to the cost, and at what point does it become uneconomical to repair (i.e. do they repair it up to 9.5k which is it's value, or do they cut off at less than this)?
Any thoughts would be appreciated - I would really like to keep the car as it's been great for me and could have seen myself keeping it for a many more years to come.

they'll decide on trade value so itll be worth 6k max to the trade in good nick. They see 2k as no cost at all so if it needs more than 4k repairs it will probably be written off.
Thanks for the info. Any idea how much a B-Pillar replacement would add to the repair cost? Am I in the right ballpark of £2-3k for the door replacements?danlowry said:

No easy without pictures. Iirc if the repairs are more than 60% of the value, it’ll be written off.

Really depends if it has shifted the B pillar or not.

Looking at that , may well be a new drivers and passenger door skin, or base door assemblies. Might be able to negate some of the cost if you can find a breaker E91 and have the doors repainted from that, Wing could be an easy fix.

Dare I ask the cost of a new B-Pillar?Really depends if it has shifted the B pillar or not.
I seriously doubt that has damaged the b pillar, my mate had an 'off' in his e90 which resulted in much more damage than that to the drivers side doors and sill, the b pillar took a knock which resulted in a small dent on it just above the sill but no major damage.
OP; Do the doors open shut ok?

Unfortunately not - the front doesn't open (or at least, it didn't open easily and I didn't try to force it). The rear wouldn't close either, had a very small gap around the top. Does this change your opinion?OP; Do the doors open shut ok?

At what point does it become necessary to change the B-Pillar?

Nope, when my mate had his accident both doors were completely caved in, the drivers window had smashed and the sill below the drivers door and b pillar had gone from being about 6 inches thick to smashed flat, the back door wouldn't open and close properly and the bodyshop had to cut the front door open with a disc cutter. And after all that the b pillar was still where it was supposed to be and (relatively) straight, it looked like the hinges on the doors bent before pulling the pillar out of shape.

Appears repairable based on the photo. Once properly inspected that may change depending upon what's found.
The problem will arise as replacement parts & materials will be priced at manufacturer's recommended retail price (MRRP) & cheaper alternative or second hand parts aren't considered.
Plus estimated labour costs.
Little wonder that so many cars with what is often minor damage are written off as the insurance company decides it isn't economically viable.

Ouch.
My wife reversed her F31 3 series touring along a low wall when parking and wrote off 2 doors and the sill.
3 quotes ranged from 2.5k - 3.5 k (later included painting the rear bumper as it had a scuff).
It was in sapphire black, 2 new doors, sill painted and bumper the bill to insurers was £3.4k, approx £3k without the bumper element. That was on an 18mth old car approx 3 years back so I think your estimate is pretty accurate.
