Polishing a car properly.....sponges/ polish question!

Any experts out there???
I need to polish the car properly. I've bought a good polisher, also the foam pads of I believe increasing or decreasing harshness depending on colour.
Now....I've only ever used elbow grease and colour magic up to now but I fancy doing a really nice job.
I'm not sure of exactly how to, and which particular polish to buy..
I've looked on you tube which doesn't really help much.
Any experts out there to help?

You need to make sure you clean and decontaminate your car before unleashing the polisher. Its quite easy to add more swirls than you remove.

As I'm sure you have found it is a bit of a minefield, there are so many variables, machine polishing isn't a one size fits all process.
