That could just be a broken bumper clip

What’s the state of he rest of the bumper?

How hard was the impact, may not just be the skin and could be a bent crashbar, have you checked the boot floor for creases (beyond the normal E46 cracks) too?

Take the whole rear bumper off and make sure everything behind looks ok - i.e. not crushed or pushed in. If everything is ok, it's probably easier and just as cheap to replace the rear bumper with a salvage piece - there will be plenty around. Check ebay, salvage website, the Bimmer website & forum, shouldn't cost must to replace and chances are you'll get one in the same colour as the rest of your car.

Surely if you were hit from behind it's an easy claim from the other drivers insurance? Or did something else happen?

Yeah went to local garage and he said it not worth fixing the car bumper.

There quotes are too high in my local area.

Since the car is too old a 2004 model insurance is not offering much.

So they asked us to check with garage and get quotes or take the write off value.

The car is very low mileage of around 65k and is working fine.

I have to look around we are in essex any recommendations would be helpful.

The bumper is the least of your worries.
The back panel is damaged and more than likely the boot floor too.
That will be an insurance write off

That looks like bumper replacement, boot repair/replacement, lower panel under rear lights replacement, and possible other damage behind.
Why are you so concerned about a plastic bumper, when the whole rear of the car is mangled?
I would be more concerned at the metalwork damage, rather than a plastic bumper cover that is easy to replace.

^^^This. And what Mexman said.

To answer your paint code question the paint code will be on the sticky label on the car. On a BMW of that age likely to be one on the inner wings under the bonnet. If not there it will be on the sticky label on one of the front door body apertures.
BMW usually put the colour name on as well - albeit it might be German.
May be of help: http://www.lltek.com/bimmergate/html/how_to_find__... or www.avrmobiles.co.uk/acatalog/bmw-paint-colour-cod...

Exact shade will vary as to what batch of paint was in use at the time the car was built. The paint code does not take this into account.
You will need to go to a motor factor that does paint & compare their swatches against the car for the nearest match.
An exact match - or at least as close as you're going to get - would involve an eyematch by the factor.
