I have grown attached to an old banger I bought. 1.9tdi 130 MKIV Golf.

The rear arches are corroded and I want to fix. It has been suggested to cut the rear arches of another golf and weld them on. I know it's rough but it is a £900 car.

My local scrappy has a 3 door with good donor arches. Would a 3 door reach arch be the same shape as a 5 door?

Thanks for any help!

Even if you weld replacement arch it will just rust from the inside of the weld out.

Only alternative I can think of is replacing the whole panel but that seams extreme.

From what I can make out, new panels is the way to deal with corrosion on a keeper
R8 in for new bonnet as we speak, £3500 all in (70% contribution from Audi not bad on an 11 year old car!)
Same story on my 987 arches. Few hundred quid for a rubdown & blow over that will bubble again in 2 years, or £2.5k for brand new L&R wings ready to give 15 years of rust free service

Do my beady eyes detect a pun scratchchin

On topic, are we talking whole new panels, fresh from the manufacturer?
What are the chances the chassis is also rusted?
Have same problem on a mk2 clio and I'm rather attached to it, but 2-3k is a lot to spend on a car worth 50-75% of that.

Oh aye an R8 it's worth it. Not an old MK4 golf. I just want to have some pride in it.

I'll try welding new sections in and treat the metal underneath as best as possible. I work with underwater stuff so have a few tricks to try and keep corrosion away.

I'm willing to spend 2K on a 1k car just to have it for as long as possible. I love having an old motor to fk about with.

I have confirmed myself the arches definitely will not fit.
