I removed the rear number plate on my Subaru Legacy today and found this.



Let's ignore the plastic grommets and just bang two self tappers through the aluminium boot lid. Tossers.

So, what's the best way to tackle this? It doesn't have to look particularly pretty as it's hidden behind the plate. Why people don't just stick them on I'll never know.

Dis-similar metal corrosion. You need to strip back the paint and fully remove the iron oxide. The newly exposed Aluminium will very quickly form an oxide layer but this is OK. Paint over.

Seems standard practice to most dealers of any makes
Ignore the ore made plate hold in the boot and fit the plates where ever they feel likee

Etch primer for aluminium

Sand back to good metal then brush on a bit of zinc chromate primer then topcoat
