I have purchased a cheapo ebay Carbon boot spoiler for my 640d. I was expect plastic or fibreglass with a fake carbon paint finish or similar, but it would appear to be actual carbon, which is both awesome and not so awesome.

Dry fitting it with masking tape shows that it isn't quite a perfect fit, one of the ends has a 5mm gap when the opposite end is laying flush(ish), with it being carbon, its quite difficult to twist it to make both ends sit flush.

I committed to seeing how well the tape would work as I figured the worst case would be having to cut through it with fishing line and cleaning up the residue.

The fitted double sided tape is not 3m branded and also appears to sit in a shallow channel, so when I attempted to fit it, the tape barely made contact with the boot lid.

I'm wondering if there is a slightly thicker version of the tape, similar to what is used for the badging that might work, I don't want to commit to using a PU adhesive just yet, I'll leave that as a last resort.

I will likely contact the seller as well, just to see what recourse I have there.

Double the tape up or grind/sand the spoiler until it fits?

There’s loads mate, see the below post I wrote on tiger sealing a spoiler. I also wanted to 3m tape mine on my golf R as like you, I didn’t want to commit. Too late! I’ve committed this Morning frown but there’s loads of bits of amazon, various diff sizes etc. I’ve ordered about 5 rolls of the stuff lol, they didn’t seem up to the task though, not for the type of spoiler I wanted to fit. However if your fitting a lip spoiler I think it would be fine. Providing to clean/prep surface prior and maybe even heat it up before hand

Might be a case of trying for a best fit on this one matey.
How much meat have you got to play with in the middle of the spoiler?

Asking because the best course of action may be to block the middle section down on its underside...it'll bring the ends down as it thins out the part.

You say you've got 5mm clearance and one end when opposite end touches the boot surface?
If you mount the spoiler touching in the middle then hopefully you'll have an average of 2.5 mm approx clearance on either end?
