I was driving down a country road today and reached a thin part of the road and let another driver go, as I was driving the leaves from the hedge/bush at the side of the road were touching the side of my car. Would this cause scratches/damage?

Yes, they can. Happened one of mine a few years ago, although more modern “soft” paint on cars probably doesn’t help matters

Yes they do. Mostly they are glancing scuffs that can be polished, or rubbed down and polished.

Given that its now happened, there's no point discussing hedges in general but rather to assess your paintwork - has it left any scratches behind? are the scratches deep (check this by seeing if the scratch catches your fingernail)?

If there are no deep scratches, any light marks can most likely come out with some machine polishing. If there are mostly light scratches but a couple of deep ones, it can be improved greatly with machine polishing, and then you can decide what to do with the deeper ones.

It would be helpful if you could post a photo on here

Hedges can cause serious bodywork damage, I'd advise not driving into them.
