Stone chips, light rust?
Discussion
Hi,
After washing my car yesterday I have noticed two stone chips on the roof which have a little surface rust.
What is the best way to touch these up?
I have read about lightly sanding them but the stone chips are no bigger then 2mm so I don't see how this is possible without ruining the surrounding paint.
If I leave them (only I will spot them) is it likely to get worse? My old VW had quite a lot of stone chips on the bonnet which never seemed to get worse (spread) for the years I had it.
I have only had the car for a few months (used, bought from the main dealer) and I am guessing they will not help me with this.
Thanks.

A fibreglass abrasive pencil might be what you need.
Failing that a tiny bit of wet and dry on the end of a dowel might do the trick depending on size.
Buy some rust remover and converter and dab it on with a toothpick for a proper job.
Same with application of the touch up, letting it flow from the end of a toothpick usually results in it being able to self level better. Don’t do it when the panel is warm.

Thanks,
So just to confirm,
either use a fibre glass pencil to scrape away the rust
or
use a chemical remover like this to remove the rust and contain it?
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hammerite-HAM6710013-400m...
then touch it up as per normal?
Thanks

The chemical rust solutions tend to only deal with a certain amount of rust. If it’s more than flash rust I think it would probably come back through.
I’d use the pencil first, then use the converter then go however far you feel with the number of different products as the top coat.
Some use a single colour touch up, I prefer the two part ones.
