7yr old Hyundai, owned from new, no repairs, car washes in the last 12 months, or panel damage. Paint bubbling and flaking, like some sort of chemical damage., only noticed today.

The oddest thing, the primer is a rather fetching shade of camouflage green.

Looks as if someone has pointed a heat gun at it

Ahh yes, no scorching though, and not parked anywhere a heat gun would be used.

There is info missing here. Have you actually owned this car? Has this just happened overnight?

Owned from new 2014.

Not using the car much, short journeys 3-4 times a week. Drivers side so it'd be quite noticeable. Spotted today whilst running an errand.

I must admit (and I've spent quite some time in the motor trade) I've never seen anything like it before.

That looks likes its been painted before and just lifted, just because you have owned it from new doesn't mean it hasn't been painted before

I thought that, but 7 yrs is quite sometime for a paint flaw to show. We had some front end damage repaired 3 yrs ago (bonnet, bumper, blend into wings etc. But this is the rear drivers side door.

Khaki primer surprises me a bit too.

It'll get repaired at some point, no hurry, shedding and dog car.

Does the primer feel very smooth? Apparently if the primer isn't keyed properly before the base coat is applied the paint will just sit on the primer rather than stick to it. Eventually something (maybe a stone chip) will break the surface and cause it to start flaking off.

Could be.

I don't take much care of it, so wouldn't have noticed a chip. Lives outside, very exposed to the weather, happened all of a sudden.

Yes it is a strange one, it just looks like the paint has become detached from the primer below somehow, known as peeling or delamination.
If it had a dodgy repair you could fully understand it, but not from the factory.
Unless it was damaged by the factory or the dealer before you got it and had a hasty 'smart' repair.
Sometimes caused by excessive sun, but given it's only Spring and presuming you're in the UK maybe not.

I showed it to a couple of people today, both said topcoat not bonded with primer.

No repairs in that area since we took delivery new in 2014. I suspect a stone chip allowing moisture in.

I'm in no hurry so probably sort it in the summer.
