Ceramic coating and respraying.
Discussion
Hi
Does ceramic coatings need any treatment before respraying? I got a quote for some body work and told the workshop that my car has a ceramic coating (Supagard 3 year) just to let them know in case it affected the respray. They seemed to think it wouldn't affect the work as they would be sanding and polishing the area they'll be working on. Obviously this will be true for the areas that's getting rubbed down, primer, painted and clear coated. However my concern is for the areas where they'll be blending and if ceramic coating isn't removed the paint may peel? So just wondering what would the correct procedure with regards to existing ceramic coatings and respraying? If the coating needs to be removed what would be the way to do it? The work shop is ran by several guys in their 50s, well established and has a great reputation but just a bit concerned they didnt think the ceramic coating would be an issue.
Thanks

As a painter/panel beater myself they are right, it won’t effect the new paint work. The panels needing paint will be sanded and scotched accordingly which pretty much removes the ceramic coating, then cleaned using water base and solvent base degreasers. They’ll blend the colour (basecoat) where it needs to go and then clear coat the whole panel to seal in the basecoat and give it its shine. I personally haven’t had any issues with ceramic coated paint work prior painting.
