I last cleaned our 996 about 2 months ago. Today I decided to tackle the serious grime build up. When washing it, I noticed an area on the passenger door where there appear to be 'crazing'. Area is probably about 200x300mm.

The weird thing is that I'm near certain there was no sign of this las time I washed the car. It's really obvious up close and I'd be amazed if I could have missed it.

Anyway, what's the likely cause?

And maybe more importantly, what's the cure?

Has this been repainted in your ownership/by a previous owner?

Looks like crazing & your only solution is strip back to sound surface - bare metal & start again may be preferable - and refinish.

Yeah, looks like the paint has been compromised in some way. No easy fix but to strip and re-paint.

my guess would be its had a cheap paint job with poor quality clear coat on that area

1k clear often does this after a while

Worst I ever saw for that was a pale metallic gold Mercedes 350SL.
The whole car looked like the OP's pic.
Don't know the back story as the car was parked up.
