Grey Bumper Plastic...Undoing My Mistake?

2016 Ford Kuga.....black, but with grey plastic inset in the rear bumper.
Noticed last week I've picked up a scratch on the grey plastic. Tried some scratch remover.....
Didn't do a thing. All I've managed to do is take some of the colour/gloss out of the area around the scratch, made it quite dull.
I was going to try whitening toothpaste on the scratch....but as for the dullness, I haven't a clue!
Hoping this can be a DIY job, even for someone as clumsy and limited as me.....I should learn not to tinker......
