A number of different manufacturers now offer "frozen" matt type paint finishes as factory options.

I've no experience of such paintwork so am curious to know whether maintenance (cleaning, polishing and waxing) is the same as for metallic or solid colour paint?

Does matt paint still have a clear coat applied on top of it or does it need to be treated differently?

Thanks.

You can get matt clearcoat - and matting agent to add to clearcoat.

Your main issue is likely to be repairs.
If repairing matt paint you can't sand out any nibs (bits of dust etc) as this would then need the sanding scratches polishing so you'll finish up with a shinier patch.
You may find that some bodyshops won't touch it because of these issues.

Before I retired I SMART repaired for the best part of 20 years & neither I nor the 3 local bodyshops I used to recommend would touch matt paintwork.

Thanks Paintman. Useful to know that repairs may be harder.

Apart from that, no special procedures needed for cleaning, polishing etc?

Personally if I was buying a brand new Matt painted car I’d probably get the whole car PPF’d (Matt obviously) so it reduced the chance of needing to worry about the paint at all.

I don’t think it can be polished

You’ll need to use specific shampoo and if you polish it in the traditional sense you’ll ruin the finish. I think specific top dressings are available in place of conventional wax.

Hmm, sounds more complex as I had feared. Makes me wonder whether it's worth the bother.

Thanks for the feedback.

Might be a wrap rather than painted, I remember Ford doing a Matt black RS Focus that was wrapped

BMW offer a frozen blue colour for the latest M4 which I don't believe is a wrap.
