Error of judgement through a narrow exit. Scraped the NS rear on brick wall - damage to the sill, the door and rear arch.

Not just a buff out/T Cut job I'm afraid. frown

I don't believe this repair will be cheap - can't imagine anything less than 2k?. Could go via insurance, but I think there's a decent possibility they'd be writing the E91 off (assuming E91 value ~ 5k).

Can always buy a second hand door and sill from ebay. It's the arch area that's properly shagged that I think will be the major problem.

What do you guys reckon? She's absolutely gutted. Mistakes happen, one of those things. cry

That's nowhere near a £2k job that pal; c£500 I reckon.

A decent bodyshop will have that pulled/filled/primed and resprayed soon enough; may have to blend into the front door and more onto the rear quarter, so could be closer to £800. But I'd say that's about it

No where near a write off. £500-800 I reckon if paying to have it done.
Agreed not worth an insurance claim.
DIY probably cheaper. Filler and or dent pulling kit.
Could probably glue pull most of it out to minimise filler use.
Anyhow hope no one was hurt.

Thanks for the replies guys, that's reassuring.

If it's <1k, no bother, will just crack on and get it repaired. I'll get a quote next week. Was just expecting the worst.

I know when you go through insurance all of a sudden anything that could be repaired, needs to be replaced and then some...so all of a sudden the quote goes up exponentially.

Just pride. She's quite upset about it, but I've told her not to worry. These things happen. I don't envisage us ever selling this car, it'll be run into the ground so it's not a big deal.

If she does the same to the X5 however...then we'll have issues!

Get a second hand door from ebay breakers, you might even strike lucky with the colour...and you can change the door yourself...

The dent in the wheelarch needs to be pulled out and made good. Easy job for any competent body shop.

You can clean it up and re spray. Or, as said, pull and fill. Probably £500 to £800. A friend had similar, probably worse, for about £450 five years ago.

Thanks again for the replies, appreciated.

A point to note - this topic was originally posted in the BMW section, hence the E91 in the title (rather than 'car' or 'Touring' etc).

Rattle can it. Someone ran into my car in a car park and drove off badly denting the wing, BMW wanted £1200 for the repair so I thought sod it I am keeping the car until it dies so pulled the wing out as best I could with my hands and left it. There was no missing paint but I ran the car for about 10 years with a dented wing.

I can't pull out panels.

If it was just paint damage, perhaps that would be an option.

It needs to be repaired (for my wife's sake at least).

Get a few quotes but as others have said you shouldn't be looking at more than £300- £500 to 'tidy it up'

My daughter had similar damage to her 2012 Citroen, quoted £250 but the bloke advised to get a new door on ebay and a spray can...the issue is you will always know its there, you'll find yourself looking all the time (unless you really don't give a toss) and no home repair will match even a basic repair done at a bodyshop.

Buy a secondhand door the right colour for 100 quid or so. It's not much more than an hour to swap - an absolute piece of cake. The arch can be pulled out, spooned up with filler and rattle canned.

£150 DIY.

Drill holes, self tapping screws and pull on them with mole grips. A slide hammer is better but not everyone has one.

Never before has a thread attracted such a blindly optimistic set of responses.

OP you are correct- go through insurance and it'll easily run to £2k+

However that is exactly what I would do. There's a chance it'll be repaired. If it gets written off you can get the payout and buy back the salvage and then repair it.

The repair cost obviously correlates to the quality of the repair. OP hasn't said anything about DIY'ing it so we have no idea whether they have the aptitude or inclination towards DIY. If you just rattle can it, it'll look absolutely terrible and draw attention to itself. If you try and DIY pull it and fill it, It'll take a lot more time and the result will be just as bad. Unless you happen to be experienced in DIY bodywork repair It needs a body shop.

This post below would be my approach to the repair.

Out of interest, what repairs have you successfully carried out with this method?

Thanks for your input HustleRussell. smile

Took the car to the bodyshop yesterday. His words on seeing it: "strewth". hehe

Asked him a ballpark - more or less than 1k? He seemed to think more. He'll quote for new door but suggests best course of action will be a second hand one so looking on eBay (think I've found one in the correct colour - Le Mans blue + has the privacy glass as well). Will update once the quote comes through and the course of action I decide. Thanks to all who've replied.

(And FWIW, I certainly have neither the aptitude or inclination for a DIY repair!)

Just bear in mind a 2nd hand door even in the correct colour may not be a perfect match and/or will have some minor defects that would need painting anyway.
I'd repair the door personally
