I am currently in the process of turning a 1981 BMW R100 into a café racer, I want to give the engine a good clean, happy to take out of frame etc to clean what are people recommendations for best cleaners to use, don't really want to go down the media blasting route as it is a runner and don't want to fully strip it down. Thanks in advance

Autoglym engine and machine cleaner is pretty good or a cheaper alternative is the no nonsense heavy duty degreaser in screwfix.

Bilt Hamber stuff is really good. I've used their car shampoo, fallout remover, panel wipe, gel rust remover and clear anti corrosion wax spray and all are excellent.

Their Surfex HD all-purpose-cleaner/degreaser is probably the most mentioned product on detailing world, but care needs to be taken with it as it can tarnish/stain if not diluted sufficiently.

Deox-C crystalline rust remover would allow you to drop parts into a bucket of rust remover solution overnight.

Ferrosol (alternative to WD-40/GT-85) could also be used to disperse water after a wet ride.

Yes, Surfex HD is good.

If it's thick/heavy deposits like long term oil leaks mixed with dirt, what can be effective is starting with something like WD40 or paraffin to get through most of it, then using a cleaner like Surfex to remove the much lighter oiliness this leaves behind.
