My ‘88 T25 van’s paint is now very flat. And no amount of polish will get it back to showroom finish. It is mostly original Timor Beige but completely matt and very thin in places.

I quite like the patia distressed look and don’t want to renew it until I can tackle some areas of metal work and have cured the rusty bits.

What is the best product or are there any ideas of a product that will give a bit of protection to the paint that is left? In the military aviation world, we used PX15 (I think it was called), which is a WD40 type product. Wiped on easily with a rag, it is a water dispersant / repellant.

Anyone used similar in the car world? Thanks in advance.

Have a look at the Airglide products - https://www.airglideltd.com/transport/ - I’ve used them on a couple of cars to good effect and for at least a couple of years (after which I sold them so can’t report further). BTW both vehicles largely left in the open in the Italian sun for much of the year.

They won’t of themselves do much to improve the paint but will protect and prolong its life and make it easier to keep the vehicle clean.

No affiliation; I paid my own money for the productsmile.

Are you looking for something to stop the paint peeling away or simply protect the paint like a normal sealant would?

The paint is attached ok and not pealing. But very matt, faded and thin in places. Quite a nice finish for an old van!

So really just looking for something to protect what’s left. Polishing just seems a waste of polish and hard work on the matt surface.

The previously mentioned PX15 was just a wipe on product we applied to aircraft panels, which did add a shine but was really just a water dispersant to protect the paint from sitting outside for long periods especially in salt laden environments, ie at sea. Just applied with a damp rag.

WD40 type products will give a shine, but won't last very long.

If you just want to protect the paintwork then why not a wipe on, buff off type ceramic/graphene coating? I use 303 Graphene Nano Spray, which is easy to apply and seems to last a while. There's a whole host of similar products to suit your taste.

You’re just after a sealant then. Something that can be user applied and lasts well, consider the infinity wax stuff or even some simple GYEON spray on rinse off stuff should help a little.

Typically before applying you would cleanse the paint to give the sealant the best chance of bonding, that might be tricky for yours as the cleaning may remove paint.

Not really what you are asking for, but my T25 had gone very matt and I wanted some gloss back. So, I did this....

Quite a few hours work and my wife has now done some vinyl for it too on some fancy machine she has...... Just got back from Brittany.

Maybe an older but still good wax such as Collinite 476 would be good for adding protection.

Autoglym Super Resin sounds like the product you are looking for.

When I was around VW's, the patina boys would use Ankor wax. Might be worth a look.
