Do you think it's worth paying £500+ for professional detailing on a fairly average car (2018 Ford Mondeo).
I'm considering having a thorough detailing job done on the car, 3+ stage machine polish etc.
I do value having my car looking its best but will I think this was money well spent when it's done? Entirely subjective I know but just wanting some thoughts

It will be money well spent if you get pleasure from the result. But it won't affect resale values for instance, unless you sell right away.

So don't do it if it's £500 you can't afford to lose

Pretty much what he said^

But there's no reason why you can't buy some Bilt Hamber products (other companies available), and give the paint some treatment yourself.

Wash, clay bay, polish. Will make a decent impression

im thinking when i had my car detailed i just found someone to do it cheap? i was charged £80 for a wash, clay bar, machine polish and then a wax... took the guy 6 hrs all in. car looked great, though having a really good clean and polish really showed up where there were chips and nicks to the paint from 14 years of driving too close to the car in front (it is a BMW after all) went round with the touch up pen and now it looks a lot better.

It'd be a hard sell for me to spend £500 on detailing though, especially on a humdrum workhorse mondeo!

You will definitely get 80% of the look for 40% of the money if you talk to some local valeters.

They may single stage polish instead of compounds it to the last nth degree but it will also mean that you won't feel too bad when you marr it after a winter wash.

£500 is alot to spend on a 2018 Mondeo. DIY you'll get a good result check out UTube videos to see how to detail it properly and you should get a good result. Plus you'll have the satisfaction that you did it yourself and saved a few pounds !

Detailing "value" is a very personal thing, it's simply whether it's worth it to you.

My opinion is that, no, I wouldn't spend £500 on having a 2018 Mondeo detailed.

I would, however, happily spend, say, half that amount on a dual action polisher like a DAS6 Pro and a good selection of products to do it myself, and then you can also do other cars you own in the future.

But I have found I get satisfaction from detailing, I like working on cars in general and learning new things and trying different products.
