Side window rubber seals

What's happened to car side window bottom rubber seals? On many cars now the bottom rubber seal doesn't touch the glass, leaving a gap which could be up to 10mm. Doesn't this mean a lot more water will enter the car doors? I notice older cars have bottom rubber seals which touch the glass and there are no problems with anything like scratching or failed motors.
