As the title really. I have what must be an old windscreen in my 19 year old Porsche. There are thousands of scratch marks that impair my vision when driving into the setting sun this afternoon. The inside is clean, the screen wash at winter strength and the wipers are new. None of the scratches are deep, just small pits and swirl marks from over enthusiastic cleaning/buffing in the past.

The excess on my insurance is £200 plus the hassle factor of getting it done. Can it be polished out or am I better off just replacing it?

You can occasionally see improvements by using a machine polisher on a windscreen, but most of the time, the scratchers are permanent, I’ve seen people use a glass polish before but the ones that cut enough to take scratches out often leave a horrible ‘rippled’ finish.

Getting a new windscreen is always going to give the most satisfying result, but it’s absolutely key that you have a quality glass fitter, I only have one chap that I trust to replace glass in any of mine(if you’re anywhere near Harrogate I can give you his number), I’d never let the likes of Autoglass near mine.

Some scratches can be polished. You have a better chance of polishing out a scratch in a localised area of the 'screen; refurbishing a larger area due to wear and tear isn't so straight forward regardless of the depth of scratches.

Glass cover does not cover wear and tear. Expect someone to come along and suggest you accidentally drop a brick on the windscreen soon. You insurance company's preferred repairer will not supply a genuine Porsche windscreen. The other issue is that there aren't many fitters out there who can fit a 997 windscreen correctly.
