Annoyingly, someone decided to mate their car into my rear nearside bumper. Paintwork is relatively unscathed but I now have a nice crack where it has split when it was forced against a mounting bracket.

Sadly the perp was nowhere to be found.

I ve had the local body shop quote and they insist lt it should be a blend into the rear quarter with glass removal etc.

Is it absolutely needed to blend with scarlet flare? I did ask for quite for bumper paint only but they seem reluctant due to the
Risk of a poor colour match.

Cost is 3.5k

Can you post a photo showing the rear quarter of the car and the position of the damage in relation to how close to the rear quarter it is please?

In summary, three stage is harder, but it doesn't look like a particularly heavy difficult colour, you do need more space for a blend, but on a bumper, that low down, its not going to be as hard as in the middle of a door etc, your eye simply won't pick up the same differences, and there is always a shade difference between a plastic and a metal from new .

Ultimately I always give the customer the pros and cons of each option, if its an older car and your expectations aren't for a show finish then there is no way you need to take it that far. If it's a limited edition high spec car that you love then you have different expectations.

I have to say, 3.5k regardless is an absolute joke! Id be charging something like £350 to plastic weld and repair the bumper and if it did need to go into the rear quarter, (obviously I cant see that until you post an image) the total job would be an absolute max of £800.

I run my own custom paint and bodyshop, so Im not a cheap backstreet set up, and there is no way that sort of price can be justified in my opinion.

  • Edit - Is this the Toyota 3T3 Red paint?! If so, I know why they have quoted 3.5k as they wont want to do it!! It’s a right pain in the A** colour!!! It’s basically transparent and feels impossible to get the right colour match! If I was busy I wouldnt want to take it on either as it’s just too much of a pain to colour match! smile
