First up - I did something really stupid. I drove through a height restriction barrier with a bike on the roof. I've nearly done it plenty of times but remember at the last moment. Yesterday though I committed and ripped the bike off the roof. Absolutely gutted and frustrated because it's all my own fault!!

Anyway, the bike has a large paint damage on the front of the frame but I'm hoping that's it. And I thought the car had got away with some very light scratches on the side, and a couple of tiny dents in the roof.

But then I noticed this damage where the roof bars attach. Do we think this is structural, or cosmetic?

My friend did the same thing. Roofbars on car, 2 bike carriers with an electric bike and analogue bike on. Cue one partner desperate for the toilet and in the rush an interface with a very sturdy height barrier.

It wrecked the roof, rails and the impact forced the rack unit backwards and bent the hatch and smashed the rear glass. We thought it was a write off, but it was all repaired very well via the insurers. It had to go via insurers because Highways wanted a lot of money to replace the barrier.

It’s a bit of structural damage but should be repairable

Analogue bike? Is that one that doesn't have a 'digital motor'? laugh

Nothing to add, other than to say I know how easy a mistake it can be to make.

A few years ago we went on holiday to Center Parcs. First time using the roof bars/rack, the whole journey there I was hyper aware of the bikes on the roof, paranoid they would fall off. Then queuing in the car to get in they had big signs warning people with bikes on the roof not to drive too close to the check-in window as there was an overhang (covered in hazard warnings/tape). Both me and Mrs ZS note it. When it comes to our turn to drive forward, what do I do? Yep, head straight towards the overhang section... thankfully they had staff marshalling traffic, who waved his hands and stopped me before it was too late...
