I'm looking at 2 205GTIs, one is mechanically perfect with a pristine interrior, but no history, a few small but deep (un t-cutable!) scratches on the paintwork and wheels that look like they've been attacked by hungry rodents. It has a years t&t.

The other is cosmetically perfect, apart from the interior which shows a few signs of the extra 20,000 miles its done. It comes with a wadge of service history. On the downside there are slight signs of surface rust (particularly where the inner wings join the underbonnet) although there is nothing specifically wrong, I got the impression it didn't go as well and it has virtually no MOT and somewhat less tax than the other car.

Both people are asking around £1500 which I think is excessive for either, particularly the first. But my preffered approach would be to get the first one at a suitably reduced price (£900ish?) on the assumption that the scratches could be airbrushed and the wheels re-furbed.

What do people reckon? Any other ideas? Suggested prcies?

I think I'd go with the 1st car too, but they both sound a bit expensive. It does seem to be a difficult car to price though, as it seems to be going through a transition from 'fun old car' to 'classic' status. As you say the 1st car could be tarted up pretty easily.

Incidentally, is there a forum on PH where 205s or hot hatches in general get discussed? There's fora for most marques but not this segment AFAICS.

one thing to bear in mind is that the car is probably near 12/13 years old.surely its within normal wear and tear that there will be a few scratches and some wear to the trim.

if it were in mint condition,it would be a show car.ie worth about 3-4k because as previously stated its becoming a classic.
