Following on from my last post, I have decided to 'have a go' at refurbishing the wings/mudguards on my Austin. Bro' will loan me his compressor.

I thought I should gently blast away as much crud as possible should I use fine grit or beads or other product?

I intend to buy the cellulose paint off ebay store but am unsure as to what thinners should be used. I have seen some 'anti bloom' stuff but not sure what or why?

After rust treatment and fillers I guess I should use a primer?
I will need to buy a spray gun, don't want to overspend but then don't want to buy rubbish. Which sort should I best go for to use with the Sealey 2hp 7.5cfm 50 lt tank?
After priming can I then apply top coat(s)?

How many top coats are sensible?

My car is of 1928 vintage so I hope these efforts will keep it going on the original wings for a few more years yet! Many thanks for any replies.

Get the wings back to bare metal - either by media blasting using a compressor and blasting gun or by using one of the discs on an angle grinder that removes paint and filler but not the metal. Then etch or zinc prime the bare metal - stops the bare metal rusting in this damp atmosphere. I would then apply a few coats of primer, lightly sanding between coats. Then if they have dents anywhere, fill and sand to a smooth finish. Then maybe a coat of primer filler which is a bit thicker - finally use some stopper to fill very slight holes in the paint or really small imperfections.

Smooth using some wet and dry (wet) getting progressively finer with the grades. Then spray your top coats, laying on as many coats as you see fit - maybe three or four. Allow each to dry before the next one, and you could even sand using wet and dry (wet) between coats.

That's how I'd do it but the experts will know more probably (undoubtably).

Can't answer the more technical questions!

My advice, for what its worth, remove the rust with a 3M type fibre wheel (eats paint and filler but not steel), then treat the rust, skim of filler, sand back to shape (dry, do not use water) then use UPOL ACID 8 primer (aerosols) then either brush or spray your cellulose.

Bead.sand blasting can often cause its own probs, if the operator is inexperienced you could have a badly distorted and dented panel!! Be wary.

A little more to ponder then, better be safe than sorry. These aresols you refer to are they widely available? TBH I have never heard of them or what they are.

UPOL aerosols are now for sale in Halfords, they do Hi5 hi build primer, Acid8 acid etch primer, (i've used both of these with great results) as well as weld through primer, zinc primer, standard primer, satin, gloss and matt black. Body shops use them on small repairs. Your local Paint factors(car paint not decorators!! probably stock them too, but will be dearer, in my experience.
