My g.f. parents own a caravan which hasn't been used in a number of years (though in good overall condition) and are trying to sell it.

There appears to be some corrosion occuring on the body panels. They appear to be made of aluminium, and flaking has occured in the paint (the effect looks similar to paint flaking off a house wall due to dampness) and leaving pitting in the metal.

The biggest are about the size of a one pence piece. The metal around the pitting is soft (with the texture of damp bread!) and can be gouged out with my nail.

Any ideas as to what is causing this and whether it can be easilly filled? confused

Cheers Wattsie

most caravans i've come across have been made of some sort of plastic or fibre glass. Sure it's ally? i've not heard of ally going all soggy before. that's not to say it doesn't though.

Alley just turns to powder after a while , it bubbles just the same as steel when rusty .
Its the same process as fixing rust really , and seeing as your selling it , get it fix up on the cheap and flog it on ..
