Can anyone tell me why most wheel refurbishers cannot refurbish mag wheels.

I know that magnesium can catch fire, but is there a problem with painting a clean metal surface. Does it need a special primer etc.

Any help much appreciated.

Magnesium wheels can be refubished , but the reason why most companys dont get involved is
1) very very difficult to weld if cracked
2) can not be straighten end up cracking when trying to straighten them
3) quality varys greatly old italian wheels very poor and almost dissappear when bead blast to clean and prep the base alloy ready for painting , where as top quality mag wheels are fine
4) mag wheels can not be put through the normall chemical plant for stripping back the orignal paint and primer
5) I have seen mag wheels needing aleast 3 coats of heavy true powdercoat primer just to cover all the pits and flaws on the surface before painting

An example is the first RS4 , the wheels are supposed to be magnesium as it was in the press about the bending problem years ago , and many wheels being changed under warranty .
Well seen loads of these wheels refurbed with out a problem so not sure if they are really mag or not , just like alot of people think M3 CSL wheels are magnesium !

Hope this helps and makes sence biggrinbiggrin

Also mag wheels can go porous, which is a real pain in the a55. If refurbished and then they keep losing air, the customer is likely to blame the refurbisher or whoever put the tyres on/off.

I actually got rid of a set of beautiful OZ magnesium centre locks as they were too much of a liability, and used to worry about the ones on my 964RS.

No problem if you wet paint them.

Just cant powder coat, due to air coming out/through wheel wheel heat applied.

Normal cellulose primer will be fine, or maybe 2k high build if they are a bit pitted.

Hope i dont get in trouble for sneaky advertising but i own a company that sells all the stuff you need to refurb alloys, i sell at cost to PH members.

Give me a holla if you need anything, from materials to advice, always do my best to help.
